KAILUA
Series on area to center on Hawaiian perspective

Maya Saffery will discuss her perspective of Kailua from a Native Hawaiian in the continuing series The Making of Kailua at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Kailua United Methodist Church, 1110 Kailua Road.

Saffery, a Hawaiian language curriculum specialist at the University of Hawai'i Manoa, hula dancer and author, has researched traditional and contemporary stories and sacred places in Kailua along with the generations of Hawaiian and Kailua residents who still live and work there.

She will focus on the legendary places of Pikoakea, Olomana and Konahuanui.

Saffery will preview some of her research that will be featured in a new upcoming publication by the Kailua Historical Society, which is sponsoring this free event.
