Honolulu Symphony to honor Bob Hines

Singers from the Honolulu Symphony Chorus will honor Robert S. Hines at 6 p.m. Feb. 28 for his contributions to the arts in Hawaii at their annual fundraiser for community programs. The fundraiser will be the at the Waialae Country Club.

Hines was unanimously selected as the event's honoree due to his lifelong commitment to sharing live choral music with all people.

The Concordia (Moorhead, Minn.) Choir, widely considered one of the world's premier a cappella choirs, will also perform. The choir is conducted by Dr. René Clausen Solmati and features Ruth Shiroma Foster, Norm Foster and Duane Padilla. The 74-voice choir has performed in nearly every major hall in the United States, including Carnegie Hall and the Kennedy Center.

Hines has held many prestigious academic positions during his career. He served as dean of the College of Arts and Humanities of the University of Hawaii at Manoa from 1980 to 1984 and was appointed professor emeritus of the music department in 1994. He is the author of several books, including "The Composer's Point of View: Choral Music," "The Composer's Point of View: Orchestral Music," "Choral Composition: A Handbook for Composers, Arrangers, Conductors and Singers," and "Singers' Liturgical Latin." In addition, Hines has served in many volunteer roles, including the boards of PBS Hawaii, Honolulu Chamber Music Series and the Arthur and Mae Orvis Foundation.

Donations to the silent auction are currently being accepted and encouraged from individuals, businesses and other non-profits. Suggested donations include jewelry, gift baskets, gourmet chef items and fare, designer clothing and accessories, concert tickets and admission passes to local attractions.
