Singer and songwriter Bonnie 'Prince" Billy to play last-minute show tonight

By Advertiser staff

Singer-songwriter Bonnie "Prince" Billy is scheduled to perform a last-minute show tonight at the Mercury Bar.

It will be Billy's first time performing in the Islands. The impromptu booking came after being featured Monday on the University of Hawaii's radio station KTUH.

Billy, whose given name is Will Oldham and who has performed and released albums under various stage names, will be playing an acoustic set with guitarist Emmett Kelly. The duo, though not a permanent fixture, play together often.

Billy's music is most often categorized as alternative folk rock, though it is also strongly influenced by country, punk and Americana, with a thick strain of DIY indie rock running through it. His latest album, "Beware," drops in early March.

The show starts tonight at 9 p.m. at the Mercury Bar (1154 Fort Street Mall, 537-3080), with the price of admission to be determined at the door.
