Army Spc. Christopher P. Sweet, formerly of Maui, will be buried tomorrow at Camp Butler National Cemetery in Springfield, Ill.

Sweet died Feb. 6 — on his 28th birthday — in Kirkush, Iraq, as the result of a noncombat incident. He was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 66th Armor Regiment, 172nd Separate Infantry Brigade, known as the Blackhawk Brigade.

The soldier's father, Peter Sweet, said yesterday the Army has yet to provide information on the circumstances surrounding the death of his son, whose remains arrived home in Springfield yesterday.

Members of the 172nd Infantry Brigade in Grafenwohr, Germany, held a memorial service yesterday for Sweet, a heavy-vehicle operator with Task Force 3-66 Armor. His death was the brigade's first fatality since it deployed to Iraq more than two months ago, the Army said.

A memorial service also was held in Iraq on Feb. 10.

Sweet was a 1999 graduate of Maui High School in Kahului. His father said he enjoyed playing and fixing video games, and worked at the Fun Factory arcade while in high school. He was a truck driver for the Maui Food Bank before joining the Army in January 2006.

The family lived in Hawai'i for 15 years before moving to Illinois last year after Christopher bought a home there.

Sweet also is survived by his mother, Christina, and a brother, Kyle.
