5 held in brawls at Wai'anae High

WAI'ANAE — Four males and one female were arrested after an on-campus fight involving more than a dozen people yesterday morning at Wai'anae High School, police said.

One of those arrested was taken to a nearby clinic to be treated for minor injuries, police Sgt. Kyle Yonemura said.

All five were taken into custody and booked for misdemeanor assault. Most of those involved appeared to be students, police said.

The school, which was put into lockdown after the fights, resumed its regular classroom schedule in the afternoon.

The melee broke out after 11 a.m. and spread to more than one location around campus, witnesses said.

Vice principal Kevin Matsuba would not say whether campus security would be increased because of the incident, or what disciplinary action might be taken against students involved in the fight.

"We're not making any comments at this time," Matsuba said. "The principal is not here, and we're still assessing the situation."

Police said they believe about 15 people took part in the fighting. Police and eyewitnesses said the brawl may have been provoked by an earlier fight involving two girls that broke out near the school.

Several students who saw that fight said the two girls appeared to be arguing across the street from the school, on the mountain side of Farrington Highway.

One girl seemed to be making accusations about the other when a third girl joined in to defend the one being accused, they said.

Suddenly, the person making accusations and the third girl began trading blows with their fists.

Eventually, that fight broke up, and the three made their way back to the campus, where more accusations were made that eventually led to the brawl, witnesses said.
