PI'IKOI
Pedestrian in crosswalk hit, pinned under SUV

A pedestrian was seriously injured yesterday when a sports utility vehicle hit and pinned her at the intersection of King and Pi'ikoi streets.

Police estimate the 23-year-old woman was pinned beneath the Nissan SUV for 10 to 15 minutes before firefighters were able to free her.

She was taken to The Queen's Medical Center in critical condition, and later upgraded to serious condition, police said. She suffered abrasions and possible broken bones, police said.

Police said the SUV was turning left, on a green light, from King onto Pi'ikoi when it hit the woman, who was in a Pi'ikoi crosswalk, crossing from west to east, about 9 a.m.

Police Sgt. Ron Pinho-Goldman said it appeared the morning sun obscured the driver's view of the pedestrian.
