Firefighters monitoring Waiawa brushfire

Advertiser Staff

The Honolulu Fire Department Tuesday morning will fly over an area near Waiawa Ridge to assess a slow-moving brushfire that began this afternoon.

The fire was one of two that were reported at about 3:35 p.m. today in the Waiawa area. One fire was reported a little more than a mile from the H-2 Freeway and burned about two acres before it was extinguished shortly before 4:30.

HFD spokesman Capt. Terry Seelig said the second fire was in steep, remote area about five miles from the first fire. He said the fire was moving very slowly and was not threatening any property.

When darkness fell at about 7 p.m., Seelig said, officials decided to suspend operations and return Tuesday morning.

"When it got dark it didn't make any sense to put the firefighters or equipment at risk," Seelig said. "They'll do an aerial survey and get an assessment if the upper fire is continuing to burn. It might even be extinguish if it rains (last night) because it's not that big."
