WAIAWA
Firefighters douse 1 fire, are monitoring another

Honolulu Fire Department personnel this morning plan to fly over an area near Waiawa Ridge to assess a slow-moving brushfire that began yesterday afternoon.

The fire was one of two that were reported at about 3:35 p.m. yesterday in the Waiawa area. One fire was reported a little more than a mile from the H-2 Freeway and burned about two acres before it was extinguished shortly before 4:30.

HFD spokesman Capt. Terry Seelig said the second fire was in steep, remote area about five miles from the first fire. He said the fire was moving very slowly and was not threatening any property.

When darkness fell at about 7 p.m., Seelig said, officials decided to suspend operations.

"When it got dark it didn't make any sense to put the firefighters or equipment at risk," Seelig said. "They'll do an aerial survey and get an assessment if the upper fire is continuing to burn. It might even be extinguished if it rains (Monday night) because it's not that big."
