Tube Notes: 'American Idol,' 'Lost'

By Mike Hughes

Looking for something to watch tonight? TV critic Mike Hughes has some suggestions.

TONIGHT'S MUST-SEE

"American Idol," 7 p.m., Fox.

Tuesday's presidential address pushed everything back a day. That means 12 people will sing tonight, with viewers voting; on Thursday, three will be nudged into the show's final 12.

Last week's results matched expectations. Danny Gokey was the top male vote-getter, Alexis Grace -- after a powerhouse blues performance -- was the top female. In a mild surprise, Michael Sarver edged Anoop Desai for the third spot.

That gives producers what they'd wanted -- people with emotional stories. Gokey is a widower, Grace became a mom at 19, Sarver is a beefy oil-field worker with a wife and two kids.

Over each of the next two weeks, viewers will pick three more finalists. Then judges can go through the rejects, to add three more.

TONIGHT'S MIGHT-SEE

"Lost," 8 p.m., ABC; with rerun at 7.

Just what happened to John Locke, anyway?

On the island, he was sturdy and in control. How did he get to the mainland? Why did he start questioning the other survivors, using the name Jeremy Bentham? And what killed him?

Tonight, the show offers his Bentham experience. As for the name -- well, Jeremy Bentham and John Locke were both long-ago philosophers. Other such names (including Rousseau) pop in, as producers show they got something out of their college philosophy classes.
