HA'ENA, Kaua'i — A 29-year-old male visitor was airlifted out of remote Kalalau Valley this afternoon after sustaining minor injuries.

The man was taken to Kaua'i Veterans Memorial Hospital, then transferred to Wilcox Hospital in Lihu'e, where he was listed in good condition, Kaua'i County spokeswoman Mary Daubert said in a release.

Police received a call about 12:15 p.m., after six people in the valley flagged down a tour helicopter and pointed to a large SOS written in beach sand.

Kaua'i County's Air-1 rescue helicopter, with two rescue specialists aboard, responded to the call.

The rescue specialists administered first aid to the man in Kalalau Valley and then escorted him to the landing zone.

The man was flown to Waimea Canyon School Park, where awaiting medics transported him to Kaua'i Veterans Memorial Hospital.
