IRVING, Texas — The Dallas Cowboys are looking for a new backup to Tony Romo.

Brad Johnson was released Thursday after playing just four games over two seasons. The 17-year veteran was ineffective during a three-game stint as the starter last season when Romo broke his right pinkie.

The Cowboys went 1-2, but they leaned heavily on their defense for the lone win, 13-9 over Tampa Bay. Johnson was 41-of-78 for 427 yards with two touchdowns and five interceptions for a 50.5 quarterback rating. He was also sacked eight times.

The 40-year-old Johnson has 29,054 career passing yards with 166 touchdowns. He won a Super Bowl with Tampa Bay after the 2002 season and played for Washington and Minnesota.
