Molokai captures Division II girls state basketball championship

Kalei Adolpho made the go-ahead putback with 12 seconds remaining and finished with 21 points as Moloka'i beat Kamehameha-Hawai'i, 45-42, in the final of the Hawaiian Airlines/HHSAA Girls Basketball Division II State Championships tonight at Blaisdell Arena.

The putback by Aldolpho, a 6-foot-1 sophomore, put Moloka'i ahead 44-42. Her shot came after teammate Kylie Joe Mawae missed a shot from the right side and Jolenta Duvauchelle missed a couple of follow-up attempts in the paint.

Kamehameha-Hawai'i was whistled for a travelling violation on its next possession with 7.8 seconds left, and Adolpho was fouled quickly after catching an inbounds pass.

Adolpho made the first attempt to put the Farmers up three, but missed the second. Kamehameha-Hawai'i rushed up court on its final possession and missed a potential game-tying 3-point attempt from the right wing as time expired.

Moloka'i, the Maui Interscholastic League champion, won its league's first girls state basketball championship. The tournament's No. 4 seed improved to 15-0.

Kayla Lacaran-Costales scored 19 points for Kamehameha-Hawai'i, including three consecutive 3-point attempts at the end of the third period, which put her team ahead 39-33.

Kamehameha-Hawai'i, the Big Island Interscholastic Federation champion, went 0 of 12 from the field in the fourth, The tournament's No. 2 seed fell to 12-2.
