Windward water conservation measures canceled

Advertiser Staff

The Honolulu Board of Water Supply today canceled its call for voluntary water conservation in Windward O'ahu.

Conservation efforts and the return of wet weather brought Windward O'ahu water demand down to about 15 million gallons a day, compared 16.5 million gallons a day at the same time last year, BWS officials said.

"We want to thank our Windward Oahu customers who voluntarily reduced their water use during the past four months," said BWS Deputy Manager and Chief Engineer Dean Nakano. "By practicing conservation measures, Windward residents averted mandatory water restrictions and allowed our limited water supply to last us through an unusually dry period."

On Aug. 31, the BWS asked all Windward O'ahu water users to voluntarily reduce water use by 10 percent — or 50 gallons a day for an average single family of four — due to concerns about declining well levels.

Residents were urged to restrict irrigation and limit lawn and landscape watering to Sundays, Tuesdays and Thursdays, with no watering between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m.

The need for voluntary conservation was primarily due to the lack of spring rainfall and the geology of Windward Oahu sources.
