Canadian visitor dies after scuba diving

Advertiser Staff

A 48-year-old Canadian visitor died Dec. 28 after scuba diving earlier in the day off Kailua Pier on the Big Island.

Catherine Hires of Calgary, Alberta, was diving with other divers about 100 feet off of the pier when she became unresponsive, Big Island police said in a news release today.

Big Island Fire Department responded and attempted to revive her. She was taken to Kona Community Hospital by ambulance and pronounced dead there, police said.

A preliminary autopsy indicates that Hires died of natural causes and not from drowning, police said.
