KAUPO
Pi'ilani Highway section to stay closed for a week

A section of historic Pi'ilani Highway on the remote Kaupo side of Haleakala will remain closed for about one week after being damaged by heavy rains and debris.

County public works personnel removed large pieces of damaged asphalt, mud and debris on and around Kalepa Bridge near mileposts 38 and 39, and surveys of the area revealed extensive flooding, possible road damage and debris strewn along about 9 miles of the highway.

Travel between Hana and Kipahulu is still possible, but only via Hana Highway from the Ha'iku side of Haleakala. Motorists should not expect to be able to drive from Kula to Hana through Kaupo until the area is cleared of debris and the roadway deemed safe, county officials said.

Road closure updates are available by calling the county advisory line at 986-1200 and selecting option 2.
