Gov. Linda Lingle issued this statement today regarding the death of Chaminade University President Sue Wesselkamper:

"Today is a very sad day as I learned about the passing of a dear friend, an outstanding and dedicated educator, and an exemplary community leader, Dr. Sue Wesselkamper.

"Beyond her lifelong commitment to academic excellence, Sue was passionate about developing individuals into well-rounded, engaged citizens. She instilled in her students, faculty and the entire Chaminade family the importance of personal integrity, humility and public service.

"She showed tremendous courage and determination to win her battle against cancer, and never complained.

"I offer my heartfelt condolence to her husband, Dr. Thomas Wesselkamper, and their family, as well as the entire Chaminade 'ohana.

"Sue leaves a lasting legacy at Chaminade University and in our community. She will be deeply missed by everyone she touched. I will personally miss her bright smile and indomitable optimistic spirit. She will never be forgotten."
