HPU's Hopkins, BYUH's Wily earn PacWest honors

Hawai'i Pacific freshman forward Mana Hopkins and Brigham Young-Hawai'i senior forward Latoya Wily were named Pacific West Conference Women's Basketball players of the week.

The honors were announced Thursday with Hopkins for games played Dec. 22 to 28 and Wily for games played Dec. 15 to 21.

Hopkins, a former Konawaena star, averaged 22 points and six rebounds while leading the Sea Warriors (3-7) to a 1-1 record.

She had 19 points in a 79-77 loss to Harding and 25 points in a 78-54 win over Fontboone.

Wily, a former Kahuku High star, led the Seasiders (4-4) to a 2-0 road record while averaging 28 points and 17 rebounds per game for two games.

She had 25 points and 20 rebounds in a 61-52 victory over Missouri-St. Louis Dec. 17. The next day, Wily had 31 points and 14 rebounds in a 70-69 victory over Shepherd.

PACWEST WOMEN

HAWAI'I PACIFIC 70, HAWAI'I-HILO 66: Genesis Lewis had 17 points and 10 rebounds, Monica Chock added 11 points as the visiting Sea Warriors (4-7) held off the Vulcans (3-3) at Hilo civic in the Pacific West Conference opener for both.

HPU never trailed after taking a 38-32 halftime lead. A 3-pointer by Hina Kimitete, who scored 11 points, with 21 seconds left brought the Vulcans to within 68-66, but Angela Spence and Rhani Kaneaikala each made one free throw in the final 19 seconds to preserve the victory.

Jessica Hanato led UHH with 14 points and Hotia Vaaimamao had 11.

PACWEST MEN

HAWAI'I-HILO 77, HAWAI'I-PACIFIC 66: John Smith scored 19 points and Jay DeMaestri had 18 points and 10 rebounds, leading the host Vulcans (5-4) over the Sea Warriors (7-2) at Hilo civic in the Pacific West Conference opener for both.

Jason Curtis scored 19 points, Willis McPhee added 14 points and 10 rebounds, and Jeff Ingram had 11 points for HPU.

RANKED MEN

NO. 8 TEXAS 78, APPALACHIAN STATE 43

AUSTIN, Texas — Dexter Pittman had 21 points and 11 rebounds, Damion James added 14 points and 13 boards, and the Longhorns (11-2) took a 32-23 lead into intermission and were never threatened by the Mountaineers (5-5).

Pittman scored the final seven Texas points of the first half and the first six of the second half as the Longhorns went on a 19-2 run bridging the two halves to take a 44-23 lead with 14:58 left in the game.

NO. 12 UCLA 69, OREGON STATE 46

CORVALLIS, Ore. — Darren Collison and Michael Roll each scored 16 points to power the Pac-10's defending regular-season champion Bruins (11-2) past the Beavers (5-6) in the conference opener for both teams.

The loss snapped a four-game winning streak for the Beavers under first-year coach Craig Robinson, the brother-in-law of President-elect Barack Obama.

NO. 13 SYRACUSE 59, SOUTH FLORIDA 54

TAMPA, Fla. — Jonny Flynn made a jumper with 2 minutes to go for a 57-52 lead and Eric Devendorf hit two free throws with 19.1 seconds, helping the Orange (14-1, 2-0 Big East) hold off the Bulls (5-8, 0-1).

Andy Rautins scored 14 points and Arinze Onuaku added 13 for the Orange, who led by 16 at halftime.

NO. 17 ARIZONA STATE 90, STANFORD 60

STANFORD, Calif. — Jeff Pendergraph scored 21 of his 31 points in the first half and the Sun Devils (12-1) raced to a 43-30 halftime lead and never looked back in romping past the Cardinal (10-1) in the Pac-10 opener for both teams.

Pac-10 scoring leader James Harden, who came into the game averaging 23.7 points, went scoreless in the first half, but finished with 17 points to go with 10 assists.

SOUTH CAROLINA 85, NO. 19 BAYLOR 84

WACO, Texas — Zam Fredrick hit the go-ahead layup with 5.1 seconds left and Brandis Raley-Ross blocked a last-second shot by Tweety Carter, helping the Gamecocks (10-2) upset the Bears (12-2).

Devan Downey scored 23 points and Fredrick added 19 for the Gamecocks. Curtis Jerrells scored 22 for Baylor.

RANKED WOMEN

NO. 11 STANFORD 64, ARIZONA STATE 61

TEMPE, Ariz. — Jillian Harmon had 18 points and 10 rebounds, Kayla Pedersen added 17 points, and the Cardinal (10-3) won for the first time this season after trailing at halftime, holding off the Sun Devils (8-5) in the Pac-10 opener for both teams.

"It was an exciting win. Not pretty, but I'll take it," Stanford coach Tara VanDerveer said. "Jillian Harmon willed us to win."

NO. 13 CALIFORNIA 56, ARIZONA 46

TUCSON, Ariz. — Two-time All-American Ashley Walker scored 16 of her 23 points in the seconds half and the Golden Bears (10-2, 1-0) used an 8-1 run early in the second half for a 47-36 lead and the Wildcats (7-5, 0-1) got no closer than seven thereafter in the Pac-10 opener for both.

NO. 16 VIRGINIA 62, GEORGIA 60

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. — Lyndra Littles scored 23 points, including a three-point play to tie the game at 60-all with 50 seconds remaining, and Enong Stovall made two free throws with 20 seconds left to help the Cavaliers (12-2) hold off the Lady Bulldogs (9-5).
