Polihale park closes from flooding, angers residents

Associated Press

Some Kaua'i residents are irked by the closure of the island's Polihale State Park due to damage caused by flooding.

The park's main entrance road, a bridge, water system and restrooms sustained heavy damage last month. Continued use of the soaked road caused further deterioration, according to the state Department of Land and Natural Resources.

Still, some residents want access to the remote beach and surf spot. Kekaha resident Bruce Pleas says residents in four-wheel-drive vehicles who are familiar with the conditions should be allowed in.

But state officials say the closing is indefinite until significant repairs are made. Laura Thielen, chairwoman of the DLNR, is asking for the public's patience and cooperation during the closure.
