Butkus to host fundraiser to honor Butkus Award winners

Associated Press

CHICAGO — Hall of Fame linebacker Dick Butkus will host a fundraiser next week in Chicago to honor the winners of the Butkus Award, given to the nation's top high school, college and professional linebackers.

The event will be at the national Italian-American Sports Hall of Fame. It's the first fundraiser since Butkus settled a lawsuit last year with the Downtown Athletic Club of Orlando, which had been giving the award to the nation's top college linebacker for several years.

Butkus Foundation president Ron Arp says proceeds will go to a campaign aimed at warning high schoolers about the dangers of steroid use.

Winners include Manti Te'o of Punahou School and Aaron Curry of Wake Forest. Arp says the pro recipient hasn't been named.
