Kylie Sato's first shot attempt during game action in over a month — a 3-pointer from the left wing — found all net last night midway through the first period against visiting Moanalua.

It gave the Tigers a 10-3 lead and they never looked back in a 54-44 O'ahu Interscholastic Association girls basketball victory, improving McKinley to 3-0 in the Red Conference Eastern Division.

"It feels good, I'm excited to be back," said Sato, a 5-foot-4 junior guard who finished with a game-high 18 points.

Sato fractured her left (non-shooting) hand while bracing for a fall against Nanakuli on Dec. 6. She was in a cast until Tuesday and was limited to running sprints and practicing one-handed shots until then.

But she made an immediate impact after entering last night's game midway through the first period, swishing the 3-pointer and later hitting a jumper to give the Tigers a 12-5 lead entering the second.

After Na Menehune (1-1) closed it to 16-10 on Justine Aguas' free throws with 4:20 remaining in the half, Sato scored six more points to spark a 12-4 run and give McKinley a 28-14 lead going into the locker room.

"With Kylie in there, the defense has to come out and defend her and that opens up the inside for Jorina (Faletoi)," Tigers coach Abel Werner said. "It really helps. But the biggest thing Kylie brings is leadership."

McKinley extended the lead to 36-20 entering the fourth period, and Moanalua rallied but could not get closer than 53-44 with 17 seconds left.

"That's kind of been our character," Na Menehune coach Kristie Morikawa said. "We wait until we're down before we start playing the way we should."

Tatiana Dinson added 13 points for the Tigers, who were promoted to the Red Conference after back-to-back championships in the OIA White.

A.J. Verdida led Moanalua with 11 points.
