HECO says 5 lightning strikes caused Oahu-wide blackout last December

Hawaiian Electric Co. said today that the Dec. 26 islandwide blackout was caused by five lightning strikes at roughly the same time.
The blackout left all of O'ahu without power for nearly 12 hours the night after Christmas. President-elect Barack Obama was staying on the island during the blackout.
