Softball tourney at CORP

 •  Big-wave riders sticking around for Da Hui Backdoor Shootout

The SportsStan's Single Wars III, a softball tournament, is set for Jan. 16 to 18 at the Patsy T. Mink Central O'ahu Regional Park.

There will be 34 men's teams and six women's teams participating in the tournament.

Two of the top men's slow-pitch softball players will make an appearance at the tournament Jan. 17 at 7:30 p.m.

Brett Helmer and Brian Wegman, both of Easton's Long Haul Bombers, will put on a hitting demonstration. The two regularly hit home runs 400 to 500 feet.

Helmer is a four-time national batting champion and the Long Haul Bombers home run champion in 2003, 2004 and 2007 and has been named all-world 27 times.

Wegman has won five national titles and been named all-world eight times.

Both are on the 15-player team that will represent the United States in the Border Battle against Canada in July.

GYMNASTICS MEET SET FOR 'AIEA

An international gymnastics meet, featuring 200 female athletes from 16 teams throughout the United States and Canada, will be held at the 'Aiea District Park Gym today through Sunday.

The meet, sponsored by the Hawaiian Island Twisters Gymnastics Club, costs $5 for ages 5 to 18; $10 for adults; and $15 for a day pass. Children 4-under will be admitted free.

Session 1, featuring beginning gymnasts (levels 4 to 6), starts today at 5 p.m. Session 2 (level 8) starts at 9 a.m. tomorrow. Session 3, featuring level 9 competition, is tomorrow at 1 p.m. The most advanced level will start at 5:30 p.m. tomorrow.

On Sunday, session 4, featuring level 7 athletes, will start at 8:30 a.m.
