NEWPORT, R.I. — Tennis Hall of Famer Sidney Wood, who won the 1931 Wimbledon Singles Championship and was a finalist in the 1935 U.S. Championships, has died. He was 97.

The International Tennis Hall of Fame & Museum said in a statement Wood died Saturday in Palm Beach, Florida.

Wood was ranked in the U.S. Top 10 ten times between 1930 and 1945, reaching No. 2 in 1934.

Born November 1, 1911 in Black Rock, Conn., he was the youngest male Wimbledon entrant ever in 1927 at age 15.

His 1931 Wimbledon win was an historical event, as finalist Frank Shields defaulted the title due to injury.

Wood is survived by his wife of 48 years Patricia Murray Wood, three sons and two stepdaughters.
