Advertiser Staff

A 66-year-old Canadian visitor apparently drowned this afternoon on Kaua'i's south shore.

The man was on a snorkeling tour near Kuhio Shores at around 1:40 p.m. when he ran into difficulty, a news release from Kaua'i County said.

The instructor was assisting the man to shore when firefighters from the Koloa station arrived. Soon afterward lifeguards from the Po'ipu tower arrived on a jet ski and brought the man to shore.

The man was unresponsive.

The lifeguards and a firefighter performed CPR on the man as he was being prepared for transport to Wilcox Hospital and continued CPR while en route to the hospital.

The man was pronounced dead at Wilcox Hospital.
