A police sergeant, who woke up a man parked on the side of the road in Kane'ohe, was punched in the mouth during a scuffle yesterday.

The 41-year-old officer saw the car illegally parked on the side of the road yesterday at 7:30 p.m. When the sergeant approached the car, the man woke up and tried to start the car. A scuffle ensued and the man, a 19-year-old Manoa resident, punched the police sergeant. Police discovered that the vehicle had been stolen, but not yet reported.

The man was arrested for investigation of attempted unauthorized control of a propelled vehicle, and assault against a law enforcement officer in the first degree.

The man was treated at an area hospital for minor facial injuries and exposure to so-called pepper spray. The sergeant sustained minor facial injuries.
