Maui traffic death toll for 2008 officially 24

The Maui News

WAILUKU - The traffic death toll last year in Maui County increased to 24, following the death last week of a 20-year-old Kihei man, The Maui News reported today.

Jonathan Ferrer had been hospitalized with injuries that weren't considered life-threatening since a single-vehicle crash at 3:03 a.m. Dec. 28, police said.

He was driving a 1993 Ford F-150 truck that was heading southwest on Mokulele Highway when it hit the cement island and a post on the northwest corner of North Kihei Road, police said.

Ferrer died Wednesday at Maui Memorial Medical Center.

Police are investigating whether speed and alcohol were factors in the Dec. 28 crash.

An autopsy was done Friday.

Dr. Anthony Manoukian, Maui County coroner's physician, said he awaits the results of toxicology and other testing to determine the cause of Ferrer's death.
