Kolekole Pass road partially reopened

The Navy partially reopened Kolekole Pass road to military ID holders yesterday after rainstorms on Dec. 11 covered the Wai'anae Range pass with rocks and eroded a hillside below the road, forcing the route's closure for a month.

A single lane will be open for morning commuters between 7 a.m. and noon for traffic from the Wai'anae Coast to Schofield Barracks, and from noon to 5:30 p.m. for traffic from Schofield Barracks to Wai'anae for the afternoon commute, the Navy said.

The pass is not open to the public. The one-way traffic route will be open Monday through Friday for military ID holders, but will be closed on weekends.

Kolekole Pass road was opened to some traffic on Friday, but yesterday was its first day open for commuters, officials said.

The Navy previously said a contractor would be hired to repair the road and return it to two-way traffic.
