Ala Wai Challenge features Hawaiian cultural events, food that hits Da Spot

Wanda A. Adams

The 24th annual Ala Wai Challenge, to be held Jan. 25, is known for its outrigger canoe race on the Ala Wai Canal, but the range of activities goes far beyond that event.

The Waikiki Community Center benefit event features Hawaiian Makahiki games (stone bowling, spear throwing, dart sliding, stone throwing, tug of war), crafts, and activities designed to teach young and old how to create a more green and sustainable community. For example, participants will be able to mix up their own smoothies by peddling a bicycle-powered blender, working off the calories before they even take them and saving electricity. Both lomi lomi massage and demonstrations of la'au lapa'au (Hawaiian medicinal herbs and medical practices) will be offered.

Da Spot, a popular Mo'ili'ili takeout spot, will be among food vendors offering healthful Middle Eastern plates and their famous baklava.

Hours for the free public Ala Wai Challenge are 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Jan. 25 at the Ala Wai Neighborhood Park and Clubhouse and honors two living water sports legends, master canoe builder Bobby Puakea and big wave rider Clyde Aikau.

Events begin at 8 a.m. with a welcome and blessing, hula and chant and the canoe procession followed by the race at 9 a.m., entertainment from 11 a.m. and awards presentations at 12:30 p.m.

The sponsor is the Waikiki Beach Marriott Resort & Spa.

The event is free and open to the public.
