Iolani baseball coach Yonamine to step down after season

Advertiser Staff

Iolani varsity baseball coach Dean Yonamine, a two-time coach of the year who led the school to two state titles, will step down after the 2009 season, the school announced.

Yonamine, who has coached baseball 25 years at his alma mater, led Iolani to state tournaments in 1997, 1998, 1999 and 2000 while winning the Interscholastic League of Honolulu and state title in 1997 and the state title in 1998. He was selected as ILH Coach of the Year in 1997 and 2007, and all-state coach of the year in 1998.

The 2009 season will be his 13th as head coach.

Yonamine graduated from Iolani in 1983 and played catcher on a team that won the ILH title in 1982 and the ILH and state in 1983.

Yonamine was the batterymate of Mike Fetters, who enjoyed a long career in the major leagues as a relief pitcher.
