Army: Report finds Makua training hasn't contaminated marine life

Associated Press

A study commissioned by the Army says 60 years of live-fire training at Makua hasn't significantly contaminated nearby fish, shellfish or seaweed.

The Tetra Tech Inc. report released today also concludes it's unlikely future training would release substances that would contaminate the area's marine resources.

The report examined fish, shellfish, and seaweed near Makua Beach and compared them to resources from Nanakuli and Sandy Beach.

The Army commissioned the study in response to a 2007 agreement with the Wai'anae Coast community group Malama Makua.

The group sued the Army in 1998 to force it to complete an environmental impact statement before continuing to use the Makua Military Reservation for live-fire training.
