Big surf still on the way for north, west shores

Advertiser Staff

High-surf warnings remain in place for north and west shores of all islands until 6 a.m. Friday.

North shores are expected to have surf 25 feet to 35 feet tonight and 20 feet to 25 feet tomorrow, the National Weather Service said this afternoon.

West shores could see surf up to 22 feet tonight and up to 20 feet on Thursday.

Beachgoers are advised to stay out of the water and well away from the surf.

Kalani Vierra, supervising water safety officer for Kaua'i's Ocean Safety Bureau, said the wind should help make the high surf less attractive to potential surfers who could get into trouble.

"We're kind of hoping it will make conditions really ugly so that people stay away from beaches," he said.

Shelly Ichishita, a spokeswoman for state Civil Defense.said there were no reports as of 4 p.m. today of any water rescues statewide because of high surf on north- and west-facing shores of every island.
