WAIKIKI
Stuck sailboat towed off shallows, into harbor

A 29-foot sailboat that ran aground near the Kaiser's surf break off Ala Moana yesterday was towed to safety yesterday evening.

The Gypsy was removed at high tide about 6 p.m. and towed to a slip in the Ala Wai small boat harbor. The boat sustained minor damage to its rudder and stress cracks along the hull at the keel, according to the state Department of Land and Natural Resources.

The sailboat ran aground about 200 feet offshore of the Ala Wai harbor helipad at about noon. Lifeguards got five people off the Gypsy and brought them to shore.

The state contracted salvage company Cates International to remove the vessel.

Damage to the reef was minor, the state said.
