Kula forest reserve on Maui closed

Advertiser staff

KULA, Maui — The Department of Land and Natural Resources closed the Kula

Forest Reserve and Polipoli Spring State Recreation Area at 3:30 p.m. today due to forecasts of high winds.

"We are closing this mountain forest reserve to protect public's safety

since high winds could case trees to fall, block the access road and pose a

risk to anyone in the forest. Following the storm, an assessment will be

made and any necessary clearing work of downed trees will begin," said DLNR

chairwoman Laura H. Thielen.

DLNR enforcement officers will assist state forestry crews in notifying

people in the forest areas that they should leave. An announcement will be

issued when the areas are reopened to the public.
