Oahu under high wind warning until 6 p.m. Friday

The National Weather Service has issued a high wind warning for O'ahu through 6 p.m. Friday.

Winds with gusts of 50 to 60 mph are expected overnight and tomorrow morning in parts of the island, especially the Windward side, said Robert Ballard, science and operations officer for the National Weather Service-Honolulu.

Other parts of the island could also see high winds, including gusts upwards of 40 mph.

"The places that are most at risk are Kailua, Kane'ohe, all those Windward side communities," he said. "These are going to be the places that will probably see the strongest winds."

Ballard said wind gusts of 60 mph can do sizeable property damage and cause power outages.

"It's going to be a wind event that is probably going to cause some problems," he said.

A warning, which is more severe than a watch, means that dangerous weather is threatening the area.
