On moving day at the Sony Open in Hawai'i, Tadd Fujikawa made his move.

Fujikawa, playing before a large hometown gallery, shot an 8-under 62 today to vault to the top of the early leaderboard, then finish two shots behind leader Zach Johnson in the third round at Waialae Country Club.

Fujikawa, with nine birdies and one bogey, shared the lead for 2 1/2 hours until Johnson birdied No. 9 to go to 9 under. Johnson, 2007 Masters winner, finished with a 66 for the lead at 10-under 200. David Toms, 2001 PGA Championship winner, shot a 65 and was one shot back along with Shigeki Maruyama (68), Brian Gay (68) and Nathan Green (69).

The Sony Open winner earns $972,000.

Fujikawa, an 18-year-old pro from Honolulu, got off to a quick start, birdieing his first three holes, and finished with consecutive birdies to share the lead at 8-under 202 before the second-round leaders teed off. He finished tied for sixth with George McNeill (65), Boo Weekley (67) and Charles Howell III (67).

"I think my lowest tournament round so far was 65, but today it was 62," said a smiling Fujikawa. "It was a good round, and my caddie (Shakil Ahmed), he really, really helped me today, with all of the crowd. You can really get distracted out there.

"I guess today's round is half me and half him, and it was an awesome, awesome round."

Fujikawa had birdies on Nos. 1, 2, 3, 6, 9 10, 11, 17 and 18, with his only bogey on No. 4. The 62 is the best score of this year's tournament so far, bettering Tom Pernice Jr.'s 63 yesterday. The second-round leaders — Nathan Green and Pernice — started the day at 8 under.

Fujikawa's 62 tied the second-best round in Sony Open history. David Tom's 61 in the third round in 2006 is the best round in the Sony.

Morning conditions were ideal with clear skies, cool temperatures and very little wind.

Fujikawa sank birdie putts of 13 feet on the first hole, 12 feet on the second hole and 7 feet on the third hole. All were par-4s. On the par-3 fourth hole, Fujikawa hit his drive into the right-side front bunker and his 18-foot putt for par went to 8 inches of the hole.

He sank a 17-foot birdie putt on the par-4 No. 6 and an 11-footer for birdie on the par-5 No. 9.

On the par-4 No. 10, Fujikawa sank a 10-footer for birdie and a 33-footer on the par-3 No. 11 for his third consecutive birdie. He parred the next five holes, all par-4s, before sinking a six-footer for birdie on the par-3 No. 17.

He finished with a 2-foot birdie putt on the par-5 18th.

Fujikawa shot a 69 yesterday to finish at even-par 140 and a tie for 38th, making his first cut in a PGA Tour event. He qualified for the Sony Open by competing in consecutive qualifying tournaments on Sunday and Monday.

He tied for 20th in the 2007 Sony Open as a amateur, but missed the cut last year.

"I think the other year (2007), it was more of just having fun and getting experience and playing with a crowd and stuff, and it helped," Fujikawa said. "But this time, like I said, I'm out there to win, and my game feels more consistent than it did last time. My goal is different, and I'm out there to win. I just want to go out there and play golf, and take it one shot at a time. I think I should be OK tomorrow."
