Gas prices rise slightly across state

Although still lower than prices recorded in November 2007, the average gas price in Honolulu rose to $2.25 per gallon last week.

The average price of a gallon of gasoline in Hawai'i rose slightly this week, the first statewide increase in 16 weeks, AAA Hawaii reported yesterday.

A gallon of regular averaged $2.30, up 3 cents a gallon from the previous week, the AAA said in its Hawaii Weekend Gas Watch. The average price last week was unchanged after 14 straight weeks of declines.

In Honolulu, the average price was $2.25 a gallon, up 2 cents from last week. The Honolulu average was down 8 cents from a month ago and $1.11 lower than a year ago.

In Hilo, the average price was $2.44 a gallon, unchanged from a week ago. It was 4 cents lower than a month ago and 98 cents below what it was a year ago.

The average price in Wailuku of $2.45 a gallon was 5 cents higher than last week. It was 33 cents lower than a month ago and $1.39 lower than last year.


BARNWELL SETS SHAREHOLDERS MEETING

Honolulu-based Barnwell Industries has scheduled its annual shareholders meeting for March 2 in Shreveport La.

Among the items on the agenda for the meeting are the election of directors and the ratification of the selection of an independent auditor for 2009.

Directors up for re-election include Morton Kinzler, 83, who has served as chairman of the company since 1980. He has been a director since 1956.

Barnwell. which does oil and gas exploration in Canada as well as real estate development in Hawai'i, is coming off one of its best years ever.

Benefiting from higher fuel prices, Barnwell recently reported earnings for its 2008 fiscal year increased 234 percent to $11.7 million. That was the second highest ever for the company.
