Kalahikiola Congregational Church of Kohala, which incurred about $1.1 million in damage in the 2006 Big Island earthquakes, is rebuilding its historic building.

Delayed by historic landmark issues, insurance problems and the search for a architect and contractor, demolition for the the church built in 1855 began in September and is expected to take another month.

Rebuilding is estimated to take about 10 months, said the Rev. George Baybrook. The bell tower and roof were not destroyed, but both must be braced to enable the removal of the stone walls, he said. Glenn Mason Inc. of Honolulu was selected as architect and Kikiaola Construction Co. of Kaua'i is the contractor.
