No. 1 UConn ready to play No. 2

Associated Press

HARTFORD, Conn. — Maya Moore missed a shot during Connecticut's shootaround yesterday and yelled at the basketball.

The ball must have listened.

Moore went out and scored a career-high 40 points to reach 1,000 faster than any female player in Connecticut history, leading the top-ranked Huskies to a 107-53 rout over Syracuse.

"That's what great shooters do," UConn coach Geno Auriemma said. "It's never their fault. It's never a miss. Something's wrong with the damn ball. That's a unique individual right there."

UConn tied a Big East record with 18 3-pointers, including a team-record 10 from Moore.

Moore is the second player in UConn history to score 40 or more points, behind Nykesha Sales' 46-point effort against Stanford in December 1997.

Moore reached 1,000 points in her 55th game. Svetlana Abrosimova scored her 1,000th point in her 63rd game.

But the Huskies (17-0, 4-0 Big East) lost sharpshooter Caroline Doty to a knee sprain just before tomorrow's showdown against No. 2 North Carolina.

Doty, who had 17 first-half points, went down on a fast break before intermission. An MRI was to be taken last night.

Chandrea Jones had 15 points for Syracuse (13-5, 2-3).

No. 2 North Carolina 103, No. 14 Virginia 74: Rashanda McCants scored 23 points and the host Tar Heels (17-0, 3-0 Atlantic Coast Conference) used a 17-6 run spanning halftime to open up a double-digit lead in rolling past the Cavaliers (14-3, 1-1).

No. 4 Duke 57, Virginia Tech 52: Chante Black had 13 points and 14 rebounds and the Blue Devils (15-1, 3-0 Atlantic Coast Conference) overcame 28 turnovers to turn back the Hokies (8-8, 0-3) for their 13th straight victory.

No. 7 Louisville 74, Georgetown 58: Angel McCoughtry scored 24 of her 28 points in the first half and the Cardinals (18-1, 5-0 Big East) used a 17-2 run en route to a 42-21 halftime lead in handing the Hoyas (12-5, 2-2) their first home loss of the season.

No. 10 Notre Dame 70, St. John's 67: Melissa Lechlitner scored 15 points and Lindsay Schrader blocked Kelly McManmon's 3-point attempt at the buzzer as the host Irish (15-2, 4-1 Big East) beat the Red Storm (13-4, 1-3).
