Farrington girls down McKinley, 68-52

By Stacy Kaneshiro
Advertiser Staff Writer

Top-ranked Farrington used its height and might to turn a two-point halftime lead into a 68-52 rout of visiting McKinley last night in O'ahu Interscholastic Association Red East girls basketball.

Playing without 5-foot-10 Brydgette Tatupu-Leopoldo, 5-11 Kirsten Liana picked up the slack with a team-leading 18 points to keep the Governors (6-0) undefeated after the first round. The Tigers (4-2) are tied for second with Roosevelt (4-2), which lost to Kalani last night.

"The last couple games, she's started to come out of her shell, so she's been a big factor for us," Farrington coach Caroline Tatupu said of Liana.

Liana's performance also showed the depth of the Governors' front court. Tatupu-Leopoldo, along with her father, assistant coach Steven Leopoldo, missed last night's game because of a family commitment, coach Tatupu said. Even without Tatupu-Leopoldo, the Govs still put four girls on the court who are 5-10 or taller.

It was Liana's turn-around jumper from 3 feet with 57 seconds left in the first half that put Farrington ahead, 25-24. The Governors never relinquished the lead, which was the eighth lead change of the game. A late free throw gave Farrington a 26-24 lead at the half, but Tatupu felt her team should have done better.

"We feel we weren't playing our game in the first half defensively," she said. "We weren't playing our best. We told our girls we have to pick it up on defense."

The Governors took their coach's message to heart, as Natalie Mata opened the second half with a layup to make it 28-24. Ashley Gravely's 3-pointer pulled the Tigers within one, but that's the closest McKinley got.

The Governors scored five points in a six-second span off a transition play with Valerie Lesu converting a three-point play that was quickly followed by Mata's layup off an inbounds steal to make it 33-27.

In the fourth quarter, McKinley managed just one field goal. Size started to wear on the Tigers.

"All it was is we weren't in position boxing out, so it's man for man," McKinley coach Abel Werner said. "They got girls, I think, 7 feet? What are they? These girls are big. You give them second-chance points, they're going to crash the boards and go for the easy shots."

The Governors understand their strength.

"That's an advantage we have most teams don't have," Tatupu said of her team's height. "We try to pound the ball inside as much as possible. We tell our girls work the ball inside-out."

Mata added 16 points for Farrington and 5-10 Lusina Otineru had 13.

Gravely led all scorers with 22 points. She also had the game's only 3-pointer.
