High court sets deadline for UH regents appointment

Advertiser Staff

The state Supreme Court today denied a request by Gov. Linda Lingle for more time to appoint a new member to the University of Hawai'i Board of Regents.

The court ruled in December that Lingle was improperly keeping six regents on the board as holdovers and gave the governor 30 days to make new appointments. Lingle made five appointments to the board earlier this month but asked for more time to get additional names for the sixth appointment from an advisory council.

The court today gave Lingle five days to make the sixth appointment. Lingle's nominees are subject to confirmation by the state Senate.

Senate Democratic leaders had brought the legal challenge against the holdover regents.
