Kahuku girls top OIA East champ Moanalua

Kahuku accomplished what no other girls soccer team has this season — beat Moanalua — and it did it twice.

The Red Raiders upset East champion Na Menehune, 1-0, last night to advance to the semifinals of the O'ahu Interscholastic Association Red Division Tournament at Moanalua.

"I think what's wrong with this team is what is wrong with a lot of teams: they play to the level of their opponent," Kahuku coach Krisha Kai said. "Once you encourage them and get them to believe in themselves, they can do it."

Kahuku (5-5-4), the fifth seed out of the East, will play defending OIA champion Pearl City (9-2-2) in the semifinals tomorrow at 7 p.m. at Roosevelt.

After a scoreless first half last night, sophomore forward Zhane Santiago broke through with just a few minutes left in the game to score. Santiago chased down a long pass from sophomore midfielder Kawelina Gillman and outmaneuvered several defenders to break into the 18-yard box for an open shot.

"I just wanted to put the ball in the goal," Santiago said. "It was nerve-racking. I saw the goalie come out and I didn't want to kick it over.

"I was happy because I thought we weren't going to do as good as we did before," Santiago said of a win and tie against Na Menehune in previous games. "We just wanted to push because we knew they wanted (redemption)."

Moanalua dropped to 8-2-3.

The last time Kahuku played in the OIA semifinals was Kai's senior year, 2003.

"Once tryouts started, I knew they were the team to break the curse," Kai said.

PEARL CITY 1, KAISER 0

So what if Pearl City sophomore midfielder Alyssa Nagai only has one good arm.

She provided all the heroics with her right foot, scoring in a 1-0 win over Kaiser in an OIA Red Tournament quarterfinal.

"It just feels really good because I felt like I could at least help my team in some way," Nagai said.

Nagai tore her right biceps a few weeks ago in a game against Kapolei and missed the team's next game against West champion Mililani. It added to the list of injuries for the Chargers, who lost five players to ACL injuries this season. At one point Pearl City was down to 14 players.

"When I couldn't play against Mililani, I was really down because I couldn't help my team," said Nagai, who plays with her arm wrapped. "They always support me and if it wasn't for them I don't know what I would have done."

With the win, the Chargers earned one of the OIA's six state tournament berths.

"That is a major accomplishment," Pearl City co-head coach Frank Baumholtz III proclaimed of the team losing so many key players and still qualifying for the state tournament.

"That's Pearl City. In a playoff situation, they always come through," Kaiser coach Adolph Samuels said. "I told the girls if you want to win in the playoffs, you have to beat the best teams.

With the game scoreless and time winding down, Nagai, who was just beyond the left corner of the 18-yard box, put away a cleared ball on a right-footed blast into the upper right corner of the goal with 11 minutes to play.

"I was thinking, 'Oh please, don't miss,' " Nagai said. "But luckily the ball got to me and I was able to get a good strike on it."
