The next three Hawai'i Walgreens pharmacies are slated to open Monday on Maui, as the drug store chain continues to ramp up its statewide expansion.

The three pharmacies, two in Wailuku and one in Lahaina, are among six Walgreens stores to open in the past three months.

Four of the stores, including the three opening Monday, are pharmacy-only locations, which are smaller than typical stores and aren't open 24 hours like larger stores. The pharmacies offer prescription service with limited over-the-counter health items and don't have drive-through windows.

The three newest stores are former sites of Valley Isle Pharmacy, a local business purchased by Walgreens. The conversion of the Valley Isle Pharmacy stores follows the opening last month of the first Walgreens pharmacy-only store converted from another business acquired by Walgreens, Lahaina Pharmacy.

Owners of Valley Isle Pharmacy, Marada Decker and William Masotti, will continue with the business for a while before retiring. Walgreens said it has offered to hire all 22 employees.

After the latest addition, Walgreens will have seven stores in Hawai'i. The first store opened in November 2007 at the former Tower Records site on Ke'eaumoku Street near Ala Moana Center.

The second store opened in Kane'ohe two months ago, followed by Lahaina last month and a store in Kalihi two weeks ago.

Walgreens aims to have 25 to 30 stores, most of which employ about 40 people, open in the state over the next several years.

A store in Kailua is slated to open in April, while plans for the first full-size Walgreens store on Maui are moving forward though no opening date has been set.
