BYUH pulls away from HPU

Lucas Alves had 13 points and 12 rebounds, and Brigham Young-Hawai'i used a 15-0 run in the second half to pull away from Hawai'i Pacific, 72-54, last night in a Pacific West Conference men's basketball game at Blaisdell Arena.

Jet Chang added 15 points for the Seasiders (12-1, 5-0), who led by as many as 21 points in the first half before the Sea Warriors (7-8, 1-5) closed to 38-35 at the half.

Jeff Ingram scored 18 points and Cliff Hodge 16 for HPU, which tied the score 38-38 to start the second half and was within 47-43 when BYUH scored 15 straight points to seize control with 6:25 to play.

Earlier at Blaisdell, Latoya Wily had 27 points and 16 rebounds, and Richelle Fenenbock added 25 points as BYUH beat HPU, 75-72, in a PacWest women's game.

The Seasiders improved to 7-7 overall and 3-2 in the PacWest. Tiffany Wilson scored 19 points and Mana Hopkins 16 for the Sea Warriors (8-9, 5-1).

Elsewhere in DII basketball:

Chaminade 92, Academy of Art 61: Noah Gottlieb had 10 points, 16 rebounds and 12 assists as Chaminade prevailed in a non-conference men's game at McCabe Gym. Darrell Birton, who hit seven 3-pointers, added 23 points and Jamar Berry 19 for the Silverswords (9-7). Weleh Dennis led the Urban Knights (3-17) with 27 points.

Academy of Art 99, Chaminade 80: Caprice Hall scored 28 points as Academy of Art prevailed in a non-conference women's game at McCabe Gym. Vanessa Wilkins added 14 points and 14 rebounds, and Levalasi Key had 13 points and 10 rebounds for the Urban Knights (5-14). Jasmine Dulan scored 26 points and Samantha Saito added 16 points and eight assists for the Silverswords (0-16).


OBITUARY

SOLOMON WAS TOP COACH

Stan Solomon, who lettered in football and track at McKinley High before graduating in 1957, died Jan. 16 at Oregon Health Sciences University in Portland.

Solomon played football at Willamette, where he earned all-Northwest Conference honors as a running back for three years. He twice was named a first-team NAIA All-American.

Solomon taught at Marshfield High in North Bend, Ore., for 35 years, and also coached several sports for more than 40 years.

Solomon was named National High School Pole Vault Coach of the Year by the USA Track & Field Pole Vault Development Committee on Jan. 2 at a summit in Reno, Nev.
