This year's group of seniors were freshmen the last time the Mililani girls soccer team won the O'ahu Interscholastic Association championship.

The Trojans won their 11th title, beating Kahuku, 3-0, in the OIA Red Division Championship last night at Roosevelt's Ticky Vasconcellos Stadium in front of approximately 400 fans.

"It feels good to win it as a senior, because I felt like I contributed more to the team," said senior forward Chelsey Goo, who scored in last night's game, and was one of two freshmen, along with Jackie Suan, who were on the varsity in 2006.

Mililani, Kahuku, Pearl City, Kapolei, Kaiser and Roosevelt all qualified for the HHSAA girls soccer Division I state tournament, which runs from Feb. 4 to 7 at the Waipi'o Peninsula Soccer Complex.

"We were a little anxious going into the game because we've been playing pretty decently all season, and you want to finish strong," Mililani coach Ray Akiona said. "Fortunately, we had the matchup on speed.

"We wanted to work on the transition game and include the midfielders, so we would have more options and time to bring up numbers."

Kahuku was believed to be playing in its first OIA title game, while Mililani won 10 previously, with its last in 2006 before the divisions split into Red and White.

Kahuku's speed, which helped it post upsets over 'Aiea, Moanalua and Pearl City, was nullified against the equally speedy Trojans.

"They were just as fast, and we had four games in five days and we had to travel far for each one," Kahuku coach Krisha Kai said. "I told the girls before the game, 'You already have second place locked up, you have to fight for first.' "

Junior forward Mari Miyashiro helped the Trojans take a 1-0 lead in the fifth minute when she tracked down a long pass from junior midfielder Sasha Moscatello past a Kahuku defender and tapped the ball past Kahuku goalkeeper Pua Silva, who was rushing out to defend the ball. Miyashiro shot the ball from beyond the 18-yard box, putting just enough pace on it so a Kahuku defender couldn't catch up to the ball before it went into the goal.

"At first I didn't think it was going to go in because it was such a slow-moving ball," Miyashiro said. "I was hoping it would go a little faster."

Mililani went up 2-0 on a goal by senior forward Breeanna Locquiao on an assist from Miyashiro, who sent a low pass from the left endline that flew across the 18-yard box. Locquiao finished with a low, driven shot into the right side of the goal in the 57th minute.

Goo scored her 17th goal of the season in the 76th minute after receiving a pass from sophomore midfielder Kristen Nakagawa inside the 18-yard box cutting to her right and shooting a low shot into the right side of the goal.

Miyashiro credited Mililani's defense, which shut out all three opponents in the OIA Tournament.

"They protect us all the time," Miyashiro said.

THIRD PLACE

Kapolei defeated Pearl City, 2-1, on penalty kicks for third place in the OIA. The Hurricanes outscored the Chargers, 3-0, in penalty kicks. Pearl City's Kelsie Ng scored in regulation. Kapolei's goal scorer was not reported.

FIFTH PLACE

Tasha Rieta, Jin Schiller and Brittany Peralta-Otsuka each scored for Kaiser as it locked up fifth place in the OIA with a 3-0 victory over Roosevelt.

'IOLANI BOYS CLINCH ILH

Patrick Shimoko and Taylor Van Etten scored one goal each as 'Iolani defeated Damien, 2-0, yesterday to clinch the Interscholastic League of Honolulu regular-season boys soccer title with two games left.

'Iolani (9-0-1) has 28 championship points with two games remaining. Damien fell to 0-10.
