No. 1 'Iolani boys hold on for 41-40 victory

By Wes Nakama
Advertiser Staff Writer

Pablo Warner scored on a layup with 13 seconds remaining last night and 'Iolani denied Punahou on two possessions afterward to hold on for a 41-40 Interscholastic League of Honolulu boys basketball victory.

A near-capacity home crowd of about 950 watched the Raiders, ranked No. 1 in The Advertiser's statewide Top 10 poll of coaches and media, improve to 6-0 in the ILH. The defending state champion Buffanblu, ranked No. 4, fell to 2-2.

"It was a pretty lucky win," said Warner, a senior forward who finished with a team-high 11 points. "We definitely needed this win; we need to get every win we can because this league is so tough."

Last night's opportunity was a prime one not just because of the home court advantage, but also since Punahou starting post Kimo Makaula was in Seattle on a football recruiting visit to the University of Washington.

Still, the Buffanblu led 27-21 at halftime and were in position to steal the victory after Taylor Crabb swished a 3-pointer from the right wing with 35 seconds remaining to put them up, 40-39. 'Iolani turned the ball over on the ensuing possession but got the ball right back at halfcourt, and seconds later guard Kainoa Chu jumped at the free throw line and found Warner all alone under the basket on the right side.

"I just ended up being there (after the turnover)," Warner said.

Without calling a timeout, Punahou inbounded the ball after Warner's basket and quickly raced up court, but a short running banker went off the rim and bounced out of bounds with 2.3 seconds left.

The Raiders were forced to call a second straight timeout after failing to inbound the ball, and then Crabb made a leaping interception near the 'Iolani 3-point arc and was able to call timeout in the same motion with 0:01.1 showing on the clock.

"He made a great play," Raiders coach Mark Mugiishi said of Crabb. "It was the only play they could have made that gave them a chance."

After another 'Iolani timeout, Matt Feldman threw a long crosscourt pass to Dalton Hilliard near the left sideline, but Jarrett Arakawa was there to apply close pressure and the ball was not secured in time to put up a desperation shot.

"We were very lucky to win; it was more luck than skill tonight," Mugiishi said. "This was the first game all season we let the other team dictate the tempo, and Punahou is very athletic. They were getting every loose ball and rebound."

The Buffanblu led 25-17 late in the first half before the Raiders closed it to 32-31 after three periods and took a 33-32 lead early in the fourth. Warner made it 37-34 on two free throws with 3:11 remaining but Crabb's 3-pointer tied it with 1:50 left.

Trevyn Tulonghari's short jumper with 1:04 remaining — his only basket of the game — put 'Iolani up, 39-37.

Crabb and Kainoa Gaddis led Punahou with 11 points each and Gaddis added 11 rebounds.
