Advertiser Staff

LIHU'E – A series of workshops entitled "Ke Ala Pono: Healthy Living" is being offered on Kaua'i for seniors 60 and older with chronic health conditions such as diabetes, arthritis, high blood pressure, and emphysema.

The program is sponsored by the county's Agency on Elderly Affairs in partnership with the state Department of Health.

The next series begins on Feb. 5 and will be held every Thursday for six weeks at the Kalaheo Neighborhood Center, from 9 to 11:30 a.m.

Future workshops are planned for different locations around the island.

Registration is limited to 16 participants and their caregivers.

Participants will be introduced to practical skills for healthy living while managing their ongoing health condition.

Among the topics to be covered include: communicating effectively; tips for eating well; relaxation; exercise; developing action plans; problem solving; and managing symptoms or problems such as fatigue, pain, and isolation.

The Healthy Living program was developed by Stanford University and is being implemented throughout the country.

Kaua'i's workshops are part of a statewide initiative called Healthy Aging Partnership – Empowering Elders.
