HONOLULU – The Hawai'i Department of Health's Hazard Evaluation and Emergency Response Office and the Department of Land and Natural Resources will hold an informational meeting tomorrow regarding the former Honolulu Skeet Club (Kaimalino Beach) lead shot removal project. The meeting will begin at 6:30 p.m. at 'Aikahi Elementary School's cafeteria, 281 Ilihau St. in Kailua.

The former Honolulu Skeet Club operated as a skeet shooting range between the mid-1930s and 1970 on the area now known as the Kailua Bay Estate subdivision. A recent study conducted by the HEER Office revealed that lead shot appears intermittently along the sandy areas of the beach and in the coral tidepools. Because the pellets could pose a risk for children who might consume them, the HEER Office and DLNR are planning a cleanup. The cleanup plans include employing a sluice box separator in the sandy walkway areas and the use of a shop vac for the rocky tidepools.

"The shoreline at Kaimalino Beach is a popular recreation area that's enjoyed by the neighbors," said Keith Kawaoka, manager of the DOH Hazard Evaluation and Emergency Response Office. "This joint agency response will reduce the likelihood that any children playing along the shoreline will encounter pellets that could harm them."
