Advertiser Staff

KILAUEA , Kauai — The Kilauea man involved in a standoff at his home with police yesterday afternoon has been identified as 20-year-old Shannon Mahoney.

Mahoney was arrested and charged with second-degree arson for starting an intentional fire on a kitchen stove.

Mahoney is in the police cellblock awaiting a preliminary hearing date.

Mahoney had barricaded himself in his residence when police arrived yesterday afternoon.

During the incident, police considered Mahoney to be a threat to himself and others nearby.

Surrounding neighbors were evacuated as a precautionary measure.

After negotiating for more than three hours with Mahoney, police officers placed him in protective custody at around 7:30 pm.

He was transported to Wilcox Hospital for treatment of self-inflicted injuries and later taken to a police cellblock.
