CFB: Florida State's Bowden, 79, agrees to 1-year extension

By Andrew Carter
The Orlando Sentinel

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — Florida State Athletic Director Randy Spetman on Tuesday said the university and Seminoles Coach Bobby Bowden had agreed "in principle" to a one-year contract extension.

Bowden, who last month completed his 33rd season at FSU, had said he planned to return for the 2009 season but his one-year contract, worth approximately $2.2 million, expired Jan. 4. He will turn 80 years old in November.

Spetman said both sides are still working through the financial details of the extension.

"We're very close," he said.

Once Bowden's contract is complete, Spetman said he would focus on extending Rick Trickett's contract. Trickett, the FSU offensive line coach, has one year remaining on a three-year deal. He has said he'd like an extension.

Like the rest of the FSU administration, Spetman is also still awaiting word from the NCAA Committee on Infractions, which has yet to release its final ruling on Florida State's academic-fraud case.

"Your guess is as good as mine," Spetman said when asked when he thought he might hear something from the NCAA. "We thought it'd be here already."
