Woman critical after near-drowning on Big Island

Advertiser Staff

A woman who appeared to be in her early 30s was taken to Hilo Medical Center in critical condition after she was pulled from ocean waters yesterday morning at Honolii Beach Park on the Big Island.

Hawaii County Fire Department officials said firefighters from the Central Fire Station in Hilo were sent out on a "swimmer in distress" call about 10:50 a.m. and arrived at the park shortly before 11 a.m. to find the woman on the beach with CPR being administered by on-duty lifeguards.

Firefighters took over the CPR efforts and transported the woman to the Hilo Medical Center emergency room in critical condition.
